THE FILM CHAIN

Production:
Stages of production:
1: Making a film requires time and preparation and also requires hundreds of people , every film starts with a glimpse of inspiration which is found everywhere , from books to magazines and newspapers to dreaming ideas but ideas cost millions and protecting your ideas is highly important and a lot of film makers sometimes take out errors to protect against copyright.

2: The development of the project is the stage in which you turn the rough idea into a final script so it is ready for production however this costs money. In able to get the money the producer may have to use the treatment and pitch , they also have to use persuasion to get the money fro the development of the script.

3: When the development finance is secured , it is down to the writer to make deliver the product to the producer and the financiers want. The writer makes a synopsis and then then he/she and the producer will then either agree or disagree with the key events on the film.

4: As the script is complete , both director and producer decide how they would want to film the movie and the type of people they will employ to help them. One way to make the project more commercial is to attach highly known stars into the script. In order to turn the film into a proper business proposition , the producer must know how much the film will cost. Precisely.

5:  The film making business is expensive and the producer must secure enough money in order to make the film the highest quality possible. Financiers can be anywhere in the world which is why the producer has to travel some distance to reach the investment they need to make the film.

6: With the financing secured everyone (including cast and crew) are hired and the detailed preparation for the shoot begins. As soon as all the head department are hired , the shooting is circulated and pre-production begins.

7: A large film production can involved many people , and it is a constant struggled to manage things on time and budget. Shooting begins and funding is realised , the producer is relieved and this is a key stage to film making.

8: Post production normally starts during the soot as soon as the first 'rushes' , raw footage and sound is available. As the processed footage comes in the editor turns it into scenes and assembles it together.

9: While the films still in post , the producer is trying to sell the film but they can not sell it to the general public themselves and therefore need a distributor, In order to help sell the film  to the distributors , the producer secures the services of a sales agent to help the producer sell the film.

10 :While the finishing touches are being made to the film , the distributors plan there strategy of marketing and selling the film. Keeping in mind the audience is essential and the marketing team runs test screenings to see how the film is received.

11: Cinema expedition is still the primary channel for films to reach there audiences and box office success equals financial success. A high profiled premier is used to launch the film to the public with an outburst of media.

12: Finally a successful run in cinemas make the film a sought-after product , which can be sold through other more lucrative channels such as DVD's , videos and games for the film. Hospitality sales for hotel channels and in flight entertainment can bring in millions of additional revenue.

Fox are a major film production company in the USA, they own 21st and 20th Century Fox,  Another large production company is Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Animation, or MGM, and there is Universal studios.

The size of the owners of the production company would affect the films, as the larger and richer owners would produce higher budget, and smaller owners will have a smaller budget.

An independent film is a professional film production resulting in a feature film that is produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system.

 Distribution:

Film distribution is the process of making a movie available for viewing by an audience.

The distributer sets the release date of the film and the method by which a film is to be exhibited or made available for viewing.

The traditional way of distributing a film is through cinemas , but sometimes films may be small scale t be released in cinema therefore they may be released straight onto DVDs or online.

A film festival is an organised, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors.

Distributors may release a film on a particular weekend due to the fact as that certain weekend may get them the highest box office numbers. For example they would not release a family or teenage film during school as they would not receive as much box office numbers as they would if they released it during a holiday.

It is important to distribute your film as if your film was not distributed well then the film would have no box office numbers and this will decrease the profit and would ruin the film chain as without distribution they would not be able to take it to the next stage which is marketing. If a film was unable to receive a distribute deal but still distributed it , it would be seen as an illegal movement.

Marketing:

Marketing is the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising. This is different to distribution as this is the method of selling and attracting customers to the product , not selecting areas to sell it in.

These are the different types of marketing for films currently being released:
Bus Advert
Internet Banners :

Films are promoted to different audiences using specific techniques to make the film significant to them. For example an English language film would be aimed at English speaking countries like England and America. Furthermore if a film was in a certain language for example in French but had English parts , it would be subtitled, e.g. the dawn of the planet apes was in 'Ape language' but was an English language film therefore it had to be subtitled.

Exhibition:

The audience get to view films in many ways , below is a list of some of them:
  • Online Streaming or Downloads
  • DVDs
  • The Cinema
  • Love film / Netflix
  • Blue Ray
  • On the television
Box office is used to refer to the commercial success of a film, play, or actor in terms of the audience size or takings that they command.  This allows us to see which films are successful and why they are successful as if they are then they would have loads views.

The distributor gets most of the money from the successful film and then the rest is split within the production crew e.g. actors and artists.

Cinemas make most of their money from the refreshment available for people to take into the film with them so they have a homelike adventure and enjoy the film in a cosy environment. They also make money from making films into 3D which customers have to pay more for the glasses. Furthermore some customers may request for the VIP seats in which they have to pay more for. The cinema screens will always be more than 5times larger than the screens people have at home and the sound quality is excellent which is why some people would rather watch it in the cinema than at home.

Ancillary markets are non theatrical way of exhibiting a film. e.g. online , DVDs.

THE BFI:

The BFI is the British Film Industry. They hold the worlds largest film archive , they run cinemas in central London like the IMAX. This helps the BFI as they would make more box office sales as people would be encouraged to enjoy the arts.
